Discover Shirakawago's Gassho-style houses, scenic mountain views, and local culture on this private day trip from Kanazawa. Journey through Japan's rich heritage!
At the indicated time, we'll meet you at the station in Kanazawa, where we'll head by public bus to the historic village of Shirakawago. Get ready to experience an incredible village, where Gassho-style houses, built in the early 1800s, are still lived in today!
As we drive through the scenic Japanese Alps, don't forget to enjoy the breathtaking scenery passing us by. After a 1-hour ride, we'll arrive at our destination, nestled high in the mountains. Our first stop of the day will be at the Wada-House, the largest traditional Gassho-style farmhouse in Shirakawago.
In this charming village, weโll see the largest concentration of Gassho-zukuri style houses, each with its signature thatched roof designed to withstand heavy snowfall. Amazingly, these homes are held together using only ropesโno nails! Fun fact, gasshล-zuruki translates to 'praying hands'โcan you spot the relation?
Alongside our guide, we'll embark on a 1-hour tour of Ogimachi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where we'll learn about local life and the history behind these historic homes. Some houses are over 250 years old, with some having been transformed into open-air museums, offering a glimpse into the townโs storied past.
From here, we'll give you an hour of free time to buy some lunch at any of the local restaurants nearby.
Then, we'll begin our return journey to the starting point in Kanazawa, where we'll say our goodbyes around 8 to 8.5 hours after the start.
By booking a private tour, a personal guide will accompany you, and you'll be able to travel at your own pace and even save money if you're traveling in a larger group!
